The buildings of this Central Station were com- pleted in 1933, but during the two preceding years its staff had already done useful work both during the catas- trophic floods of 1931 and the cholera pandemic of 1932.

Subsidiary units in direct dependence on the National Health Administration include the National Quaran- tine Service, the National Epidemic Prevention Bureau, the North-West Epidemic Bureau, the Central Midwifery School, the Central School of Nurses and the Central Hospital at Nanking.

A number of Health Centres, both urban and rural, health stations and sub-stations, are partly financed and staffed by the Central Field Health Station and used by it for experimental and training purposes.

Provincial Organisation.

In the provinces of Chansi, Hunan, Kansu, Ninghsia, Chinghai, Shensi, Chekiang and Kiangsu, provincial health services have developed rapidly since 1928. Each of these provinces has a provincial health centre with administrative offices, a health laboratory and a provin- cial hospital. These institutions are supported in their activities by a number of stations and sub-stations distributed in districts and villages.

The Health Administration in the provinces of Yunnan and Fukien is more recent or in course of completion. Thus, the Yunnan Government is now building its provincial hospital at Kunming, its capital, as well as a school for nurses and midwives and a health station in the mining district of Kokiu.

The Government of Fukien is also building its provincial hospital and has already opened its midwifery school and two health centres at Foo chow. Five mobile clinics serve five districts of the province. Since December 1935 a Provincial Plague Prevention Bureau has been established with the collaboration of the Central Field Health Station of Nanking. This Bureau has six branches of

which one is at Lungyen.

In the beginning of 1937, health stations and sub- stations were to be established in Honan, Anhwei and Shantung.

Municipal Organisation.

Municipal health departments are functioning in the Chinese Municipality of Shanghai (Greater Shanghai), Peiping, Nanking, Canton, Tientsin and some cities of lesser importance.

At Shanghai the Health Administration completed its health laboratory in 1935. It also maintains a school of nursing, a hospital for communicable diseases and for drug addicts. It has also maternal and infant welfare services, school health services etc. This health department carried out anti-cholera inoculation on a large scale (445,000 inoculated in 1935).
